Places Near Greater Lafayette to Buy a Christmas Tree

I’m currently writing this and listening to Christmas music, so it must be true—Christmas is right around the corner. And if that’s the case, it’s time to think about where to buy that all-important tree.

Here are some of my favorite places in our area to buy a Christmas tree. I truly don’t think you’ll be disappointed by ANY of these options.

Cassens Trees (West Lafayette)

Cassens Trees is a three-time winner of the Indiana Grand Champion Tree! Cassens is all about the experience of buying a real tree, and you can select your own (up to 20 feet tall) from their large barn or you can grab a provided saw and cut your own. They also sell a variety of adorable Christmas décor, including wreaths, planters, and other items.

Cassens usually has two locations open—both on Morehouse in West Lafayette and on Old State Road 25, but this year, only the Morehouse Road location will be open. They open on November 21 and 22nd and then are open from November 27th through December 19th—that’s right, they’re open seven days a week, which makes it very convenient to buy a tree.

Mattern’s Pine Ridge Nursery (Lafayette)

Mattern’s Pine Ridge Nursery on Old State Road 25 in Lafayette has several different options for your tree. You can dig up a tree, which is a great choice if you want to nourish the living tree over the holidays and then plant it afterwards. You can also cut your own tree or purchase a pre-cut tree. You can ALSO order your tree online and pick it up or they will deliver it for a $50 fee. Talk about convenience during a pandemic!

Mattern’s Pine Ridge Nursey is open on November 23rd and 24th and then is open on Saturday and Sundays throughout December (up to the weekend before Christmas).

Dulls Tree Farm (Thorntown)

It’s a little bit of a drive, but boy, is Dulls Tree Farm worth the trek from the Greater Lafayette area! They offer Scotch Pine, White Pine and Canaan Fir trees that you can cut yourself out in the field. Because of high demand, Fraser Fir trees are being shipped in from other growers. You can also select a live balled Christmas tree, but that can only last for 5 days inside and has to be acclimated to the temperature changes.

The farm opens on November 27th (the day after Thanksgiving) and is open for seven days a week through the season. They also have other fun activities on the farm, and they are taking all appropriate safety precautions, including allowing for more space between people. Trees are 10% off after December 1st.

Cottrell’s Christmas Tree Farm (Rossville)

Cottrell’s Christmas Tree Farm started small—they planted their first trees in the spring of 1991. Almost 30 years later, they have 10 acres with 10,000 trees! Wow!

They open on November 27th, and they usually run a hayride but are not doing so this year because of COVID-19. They also offer fresh wreaths for sale, as well as other holiday-related décor.

Zull’s Sycamore Farms (Waynetown)

Zull’s Sycamore Farms is an adorable place in Waynetown. If you haven’t been here, this should probably be the year. Find and cut your own Christmas tree at this charming family farm.

Crystal’s Christmas Shoppe is also open, and even better, gives out FREE hot cocoa and candy canes while Christmas music plays throughout the store. You can also find fresh wreaths, home-baked treats, and other handmade goodies in this shop.

Cruise In Trees (Cutler)

Cruise In Trees is a family farm that started just to provide fresh trees for friends and family. As years have passed, they’ve obviously expanded. Their crew is available to cut down your tree, as well as drill it, shake it out, and bag it. They have Scotch Pine, Canaan Fir, Concolor, and White Pine trees this year.

They also have a large gift shop with many different holiday-related items. The farm is open on Black Friday and then will be open on the weekends leading up to Christmas.

Local Places to Buy Pre-Cut Trees

Stop by the Lafayette Noon Optimist Club tree lot in the parking lot of Frozen Custard on Main Street in Lafayette. It’s not as glamorous as a tree farm, but prices are very reasonable (trees are sold according to weight and species). All money raised goes toward local community programs.

Bennett’s in Lafayette is having a Christmas open house the weekend before Thanksgiving, so go in and pick out a tree! Done!

Phew! If you’re looking for a place to buy a Christmas tree in our area, I hope this gives you some good ideas. And from your favorite Realtor, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
