The Best Camping Spots Within an Hour (or So) of Tippecanoe County, Indiana

August 4, 2025 by Stacy Grove Leave a Comment

Looking for an easy getaway that reconnects you with nature—without requiring a long road trip? Whether you’re a Lafayette local, a West Side weekend warrior, or just exploring Tippecanoe County’s surrounding natural beauty, there are plenty of scenic camping spots within about an hour of home. From peaceful lakeside retreats to rugged hiking adventures, here are some of the top camping and outdoor destinations near Tippecanoe County.

1. Turkey Run State Park – Marshall, IN (~55 minutes)

One of Indiana’s most beloved state parks, Turkey Run offers dramatic sandstone gorges, suspension bridges, and miles of trails perfect for hikers of all levels. Pitch a tent or reserve a campsite and spend your day exploring Trail 3 (a fan fav!) or paddling down scenic Sugar Creek by canoe or tube.

Why Go: Iconic hiking trails, shaded campsites, and Sugar Creek adventures
Tip: Rent canoes or book a float trip for a relaxing afternoon on the water.

2. Shades State Park – Waveland, IN (~50 minutes)

Quieter and more secluded than Turkey Run, Shades is a hidden gem known for its peaceful trails and deep ravines. It’s a perfect option for tent campers looking for solitude and stargazing, with direct access to Sugar Creek for paddling.

Why Go: Less crowded than Turkey Run, equally stunning scenery
Tip: Combine a weekend here with a float trip or quick drive to nearby Raccoon Lake.

3. Raccoon Lake (Cecil M. Harden Lake) – Rockville, IN (~1 hour)

Love the water? Raccoon Lake is ideal for campers who want to swim, fish, boat, or paddle all day and unwind by the campfire at night. There’s a mix of primitive and electric sites, and it’s a popular summer escape for Tippecanoe County families.

Why Go: Sandy beach, boating, and water sports
Tip: This spot is perfect for families

4. Mississinewa Lake – Peru, IN (~1 hour)

Mississinewa Lake is a great option for campers who enjoy wooded trails and water recreation. Campgrounds here are spacious and offer access to fishing, kayaking, and hiking trails with great views.

Why Go: Great for boating, birdwatching, and quiet nature escapes
Tip: Go in the fall for the stunning foliage around the lake

5. France Park – Logansport, IN (~50 minutes)

A former gravel quarry turned into a bright blue swimming and scuba diving haven, France Park is one of Indiana’s most unique outdoor spots. Think cliffs, waterfalls, and crystal-clear water—yes, right here in northern Indiana!

Why Go: Unique cliffside views, scuba diving, swimming in a quarry
Tip: The waterfall hike offers great views and photo ops

6. Chain O’ Lakes State Park – Albion, IN (~1 hour 20 minutes)

Okay, this one’s a little over an hour—but it’s worth the drive! Chain O’ Lakes offers 13 connected lakes and an incredible paddling experience where you can kayak from one lake to another. It’s a true water-lover’s paradise.

Why Go: Canoe through a series of connected lakes
Tip: This is a great spot for birding

7. Potato Creek State Park – North Liberty, IN (~1 hour 20 minutes)

Another slightly longer trip—but this one is worth mentioning for its beautiful scenery and well-maintained amenities. Potato Creek features biking and hiking trails, cabins, and water activities on Worster Lake, plus modern campsites.

Why Go: Family-friendly with tons of recreational options
Tip: This is aood option for campers wanting cabin stays or group sites

Prefer the Comfort of Home?

Of course, not everyone is into campfires and sleeping bags. If you’re more of a “glamp-in-your-own-bed” kind of person, Tippecanoe County still offers plenty of ways to enjoy nature—like walking trails at Prophetstown State Park, local farm markets, or a picnic in Columbian Park. You can even enjoy a backyard firepit and stargazing without leaving your own zip code. (Check out my favorite hiking spots here.
