Who is ready to get out of the house?!? Oh, my word. We need to gooooooooooooooooooooooo away, which is a hard thing to do these days. How about a road trip to Logansport to get out of the county and see a change of scenery?
Pack your car and head northeast to Logansport from West Lafayette. It will take you about an hour to get to Mr. Happy Burger, which is located at 3131 E. Market St. They’re known for their delightful burgers and shakes, and this will be the perfect place to stop and fill your tummy before some sightseeing and adventure. Call ahead to see what their carryout options are during COVID-19.
Once you’re full, head to the Grissom Air Museum, named after Gus Grissom, an Indiana native and the second man in space. This interactive air museum was voted the second-best museum in Indiana. (I bet you can guess the best one, too!) There are volunteer guided tours, or you can explore the space on your own. And, if you’re not ready for indoor exposure to germs, the outside fun can be enough to make the trip worthwhile!
You can sit in a F-4 Phantom, H1-Huey Helicopter, bomb loader, F-16 Static Display, and more while at the museum. Outside, check out the 24 military aircraft that served from WWII through the present day. You can also go up into the security tower that was on the Grissom Air Force Base during its years as a strategic air command facility. There are so many good photo ops here, and the kids can run around between everything and wear themselves out.
When you’ve had enough of the cool military museum, head back to Logansport to enjoy Riverside Park! This 13-acre community park includes the McHale Pavilion, a miniature train and track (which is operated by the Cass County Dentzel Carosel Corporation), and the historic Cass County Dentzel Carousel. The carousel is over a hundred years old and was hand carved by Gustav A. Dentzel. His carvings are considered top notch, and the Cass County Carousel is one of only three complete Dentzel carousels in the country.
If you’re not tired yet, another possible stop (depending on the ages of your kids) is the Village Peddler. This gift boutique has a unique selection of clothing, jewelry, home décor, and gifts. They also carry all-natural food supplements and other beauty wellness items.
Then you’ll have to make one more stop before you head back home. Get yourselves sugared up at the Sycamore Drive-In. You will not forget the taste of their homemade ice cream! And there are so many options besides just a cone. Try an chip-wich (ice cream between chunky chocolate chip cookies), fresh fruit or chocolate sundaes, shakes, malts, sodas, floats, parfaits, and glaciers (a slush drink topped with ice cream).
Well, wasn’t that fun? This is a great way to enjoy a sunny afternoon in central Indiana and support small business while keeping some social distance!
