My 9 Favorite Quiet Spaces in Greater Lafayette

October 15, 2020 by Stacy Grove 2 Comments

I don’t know about you, but these days, what I’m craving more than anything else is a place that’s quiet—even better if it’s outside my own four walls! As fall comes and then winter settles in, these quiet spaces are more important than ever. Whether you’re working or just relaxing with a warm drink and a book, here are some of my favorite spots.

The Homestead Meeting Room

First of all, if you haven’t been to The Homestead for a sweet treat or a sandwich, you are missing out. Their fresh-baked goods are ALL delicious. Then, settle into the comfortable chairs for a group meeting or some quiet reflection.

Bonus: You can grab a delicious, pre-made dinner to go on your way out the door. All their meals are take-and-bake, which is SO helpful on the days where you work too late. It’s the easiest possible route to a home-cooked meal.

Celery Bog

The Celery Bog is one of my favorite nature spots around. There are nearly 120 different species of birds and other wildlife in the 105-acre area.

The bog is also filled with quiet paths that go right through the heart of West Lafayette. Go for a walk or bike ride and let your mind wander. There are also many benches tucked into the woods if you want to just stop and sit for a while.

Café Literato

Café Literato has THE BEST drinks to enjoy while you’re starting at your computer screen and getting some work in. The frozen hot chocolate and chai latte are incredible, if you’re not sure what to order.

Order your drink (and maybe a pizza), grab a table or booth or one of the seating areas directly outside, and put in your headphones. Although it can get busy, it’s a great spot to get focused and get to work. You’ll feel just like one of the many students you’ll be surrounded with.

Downstairs in Union at Purdue

Speaking of students, the downstairs of the Purdue Memorial Union will either give you anxiety as you think about your college days or inspire you to dream big like those around you.

Purdue is currently reimagining the dining area, but it looks like there will be plenty of food options to choose from if you need some grub while you’re enjoying some quiet.

Fuel

Fuel has been in downtown Lafayette for a while, but they’ve just moved to a new location at Five Points. They also have a NEW location coming this fall on campus (Northwestern). I like the idea of alternating between both of them, myself.

This is a fabulous place to meet and brain drain with a friend or just yourself! To help you think, get the mug muffin with a shot of espresso poured over the top. It’s bound to make you more productive than you’ve ever been in your entire life.

Active Learning Center at PU

Haven’t had enough of the college life yet? Get over to the Wilmeth Active Learning Center on the Purdue campus at 340 Centennial Mall Drive. (It’s right in the heart of campus.)

This student-centered spot has a variety of study areas and other versatile space for whatever your needs might be. If your needs include a sweet treat, bonus: Au Bon Pain Café & Bakery is on the first floor. YUM

Purdue Railyard

If you haven’t checked out the Purdue Railyard at the Purdue Research Park, you are definitely missing out! This Boilermaker-themed coworking studio is so cool. It’s actually also one of the largest coworking spots in the United States! It’s at 1281 Win Hentschel Blvd in West Lafayette.

The space includes antique railroad memorabilia, plus conference rooms, phone rooms, a stage for presentations, and a two-story water tower meeting space. This space has everything you need to move your business forward, including entrepreneurial energy and 24/7 access.

Matchbox

Heading back to downtown Lafayette, another great coworking space can be found at Matchbox, located on the corner of 6th and South streets. This melting pot of entrepreneurs and artists will get your creative juices flowing, allowing you to mix and mingle, or sit quietly and get some focused work done!

The industrial space allows entrepreneurs and artists to interact and create while making Lafayette a place where young innovators want to come. It boasts 24/7 access, conference rooms, the fastest internet in town, and an unlimited supply of coffee and snacks.

Upstairs Loft Area at Java Roaster

Another favorite downtown Lafayette location is Java Roaster, which is known for its . . . you guessed it—coffee! But if you head upstairs, you’ll find a lovely, under-utilized meeting space. It’s great for a small group or a solo work session. The exposed brick and funky décor will make you feel like you’re working in the big city!

Grab a grilled cheese sandwich or a cookie to go with your coffee. They also serve breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday, and their menu changes each week if you’re the kind of person who likes variety.

If you have a favorite quiet spot in the Greater Lafayette area, will you leave me a comment? I have a feeling I’m going to need ALL the options this fall and winter.

Celery Bog is a good one!I love the wildlife and the scenery.
I also like to sit at Sonic and drink coffee or cherry limeade or eat a custom-made ultimate burrito. Sometimes I can get Starbucks internet or I use my mobile hotspot to listen to my livestream music picks. I like to look up once in awhile and see what’s so attractive about Starbucks. I think it’s the social attraction, but then I see very heavy (overweight) customers coming and going. That’s a turn-off. But the outdoor Cafe setting is pleasant drinking coffee with friends.

Yes, Diane! Thanks for sharing. I hadn’t thought of Sonic. Good when they offer drink specials, too 😉
