Alright, alright. Greater Lafayette might not exactly be the food truck destination you have in mind (yes, we’ve experienced Portland and Austin), but trust me, we’ve got some GOOD ones and you don’t have to travel anywhere to visit them.
Food trucks are often started by people with big dreams who want to create their own delicious menus but may not want the risk of running full-fledged restaurants. They’ve often had food-related jobs in the past and have the experience needed to succeed in the food truck world. In fact, a couple of our local food truck business owners started preparing meals at fraternities and sororities on campus at Purdue.
Food truck owners generally really want to be a part of our community and get out, shake hands (EXCEPT during a pandemic), and get to know their neighbors. They also usually try to buy fresh, locally sourced ingredients and do business in their community. You’ll often find food trucks at places like:
- Farmers Markets
- Festivals
- Out on the curb in front of your favorite local brewery (ahem)
Here are some of my personal favorites in the Greater Lafayette area, and they could all really use our support!
Guac Box
The Guac Box is Lafayette’s premier taco food truck, serving up delicious Tex-Mex food with you guessed it, lots of guac. I HIGHLY recommend the loaded nachos with your choice of chicken or steak, grilled onions and peppers, queso, street corn, picked red onions, and of course, guac. The roasted street corn is also AMAZING. Oh, and don’t forget a STACY taco!
EMT—Emergency Munchie Truck
The Emergency Munchie Truck makes creative vegan food, and even if you don’t like vegan food, you’re going to like this. Plus, this is food you can eat without guilt because it’s made with the highest quality ingredients—whole grains and local and organic produce and diary when available. Some of the ingredients are straight from their own organic garden!
Try the Brat-zel—a beyond meat brat on a warm pretzel bun with two toppings (seriously recommend that you try the warm beer cheese crafted with a Brokerage Brewing Co ale)! Also, the signature mac and cheese sandwich (with mac and cheese stuffed between their signature waffles) is just a delight.
Roasted, Toasted & Baked
If you haven’t tried Roasted, Toasted & Baked, what are you waiting for?
The Big Boss brisket sandwich is filled with smoked brisket topped with RTB house BBQ sauce and pickles on a honey brioche bun. It’s delicious and messy—messy means that it’s GOOD BBQ. You can also get your BBQ brisket or pulled pork in a mac-n-cheese bowl. Now that’s the way to enjoy mac and cheese!
J’s Lobster Rolls
We’ve also been seeing some food trucks from Indy come our way. The J’s Lobster Truck came last month, and we had a crazy long line! It’ll be back in front of Brokerage on September 12th.
I have to admit that I am not a big seafood fan, so I didn’t appreciate this one as much as I should have. But if the crowds were any indication, these are some delicious lobster rolls. Their basic roll is a toasted bun with mayo, lettuce, lobster meat, warm butter, and some Old Bay seasoning. You can also get a spicy version or a shrimp roll. Or lobster mac and cheese with a house spicy sauce!
Pierogi Love
Pierogi Love is another (award-winning!) Indy food truck that has headed our way recently. Man, pierogis are delicious. They’re similar to dumplings and come from Poland and Slovakia. They’re pockets of dough wrapped around a savory filling and sauteed, boiled, or deep friend and served with a topping.
The delicious Loaded Lender pierogi is a best seller—hand-stuffed potato and cheddar deep served with smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and chives. The spinach and feta pierogi also looks amazing.
