2024 Design Trends We’re Leaving Behind

March 1, 2025 by Stacy Grove Leave a Comment

TREND noun 1. a general direction in which something is developing or changing.

If you ever wondered if there are really trends in real estate, the answer is yes! Exhibit: Dumb waiters. Do you know what they are? Not many new construction homes are offering dumb waiters these days. How about sunken family rooms? Not seeing any of those being built these days, either.

As with anything else, there are trends in real estate, and here are the ones we’re leaving behind in 2024.

  1. Shiplap: Okay, Chip and Jojo got us all amped up on the wooden walls. They were beautiful. They were different. But now they’re everywhere, and I need a minute.
  2. Signs and Word Art: For the love of all the sayings, can we leave this one behind?? I mean, do you know how many homes I’ve shown and seen “Always Kiss Me Goodnight” over the bed? Not a bad request or personal ideal, but do we have to have it on our walls? (Side note: If you’ve ever been to our lake house, you’re about to call me out on this. We have at least 50 signs with slogans and sayings. They’re literally everywhere. I apologize for the hypocrisy, but they have to remain.)
  3. All Gray Interiors: Hallelujah! Listen, I love me some Sherwin Williams Crushed Ice and Agreeable Grey, but have you seen Canvas Tan? It’s so nice to see some browns coming into the mix, and perhaps, dare I say . . . COLOR!
  4. Accent Walls: They can make rooms look awkward and unfinished instead of feeling harmonious.
  5. One Metal Tone: Mix it up, people! We’re loving seeing how people can blend golds and silvers for a cohesive AND interesting look. I’m not saying to mix your cabinet handles and pulls in one room, but you might have chrome in a bathroom and black in the kitchen, and we love that!
  6. Barn Doors in Private Spaces: Hear me out. I love barn doors. They’re fun and different and can double as art. However, a barn door in a bathroom or bedroom is a no-go. Please, don’t.
  7. Two-level Islands: You know what I mean. It’s an island with a raised part for eating/service. I’m watching more and more homebuyers dismantle the raised part to have one level to prep/cook/serve space. (Also note, my mom added a raised section to her island, so . . .  to each their own!)
  8. Boring Walls and Ceilings: I’m seeing so much texture on walls and ceilings these days. (This is different from #4 above, and also popcorn ceilings are still out.) Wallpaper on walls and ceilings. Painted ceilings. Upholstered walls. Have fun! Add some color!

Okay, a few final thoughts.

  1. I’m not a designer. These are 100% my opinions.
  2. There are some “trends” that will stick around because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. (Those that love shag carpet . . . no judgment . . . it was a trend, now it’s a vibe.)

What about you? What design trends are you over?
