Owning a pool is no joke, but it’s not an impossibility! What do you need to know about owning a pool? I have some ideas, thanks to some friends who shared as we stepped into this new arena with our recent move.

Establish the Rules Early On

Establish the rules of the pool and stick to them.

Always an adult on deck

No one swims alone

No glass containers

No lake suits in the pool (algae!)

Check Your Water’s Chemical Levels

You need to check the chemical levels in your water, and it helps to find a great local pool place to help with all of your pool needs. We started by going to a local pool store, but we found out a local hardware store also tests pool water.

Price Check Where to Buy Chemicals

I love to support local, but I have found a variety of prices at places like wholesale stores and (eek…) online that have the best prices on pool chemicals.

Fly a Flag

Want a simple way to let people know you’re in the pool and they’re welcome to join you? Pick a special flag that will indicate you’re out back and they should join you! Then, tell them which fence gate to use.

Open Swim Night . . . or Day

This is some great advice. Offer an open pool day once a week from 11:30 to 4:00. Guests should bring their own towels and snacks. That way, everyone knows and can plan accordingly!

Stock Up on Towels

This goes without saying, but people will naturally forget their towels. I’ve heard having a stash of extra suits, goggles, and sunscreen is helpful, too.

Outside Trash Can

Trying to keep up with the pool snacks can be a full-time job. Make it easy for your guests to know how to clean up their messes! A lid is helpful, too.

Identify the Path to the Potty

Is there a direct path to the bathroom that doesn’t involve wet footprints throughout your home? Be sure to let your pool guests know!

What other pool tips and tricks do you know? This is still a whole new world to us, so we could use them, too!

Boy, oh boy. Owning a pool is no joke, but it’s not an impossibility!
